A national holiday

by Papi

Today is Bulgaria’s freedom day, pretty much our biggest national holiday. I always liked spending it at home with my parents, away from fuss, but I don’t ignore it. I take moments to remind myself about the things I love in my country, because so often I get distracted by the things I don’t. I never understood fully how people are proud being bulgarian, because my understanding of proud goes with something you did to be proud of. But I love my home land the same way I love a family member – just because. And it will be in my heart forever.

My grandfather always takes the national flag out for the 3d, so assuming everyone else does too, I took my camera on my daily walk with Katie, wanting to photograph them. I was very surprised that not even the local community building put one up and I ended up taking a single picture of an old communist sign.
